they are, john. i spent the last couple of days in sort of southeastern virginia, norfolk virginia beach area on exactly that question. what happened to the obama magic. we picked virginia because he won that state. the first time a democrat did that since 1964. and this particular part of virginia, they elected a freshman democrat. and since that time, he's been running away from the president. a sure sign that the president's popularity, some of ththat magi has flipped in places like virginia. the democrat appeared with then candidate obama four times in 2008. now he hasn't appeared with him at all. he voted against health care reform. why? well, we talked to some independent voters in that district who voted for president obama in 2008. and they just say, look, they have no personal against the president. they think he tried to do too much too fast. and number two, they said the economy's so awful right now, people are just in complete panic mode right now and that what they want to do is take it out on their representative. whether it's a democrat, whether it's a republican. and ther

businessman. the virginia race is getting a lot of national attention because republicans see perriello is one of the most vulnerable democrats in congress given that he represents a somewhat conservative district and he has voted in favor of obama's major initiatives, health care, cap and trade, stimulus and so on and two years ago, he was elected by the smallest margin of any congressional race in the country. they think -- the republicans are seeing this as a pickup. but democrats say that tom perriello's a fighter and tough campaigner and because he supported the same initiatives that he is giving the support of national democrats just as national republicans are trying to take him down. in 2008, perriello, who is a young lawyer from the charlottesville area, he challenged goode and beat him. this is the closest margin that year in congress. some people say perriello say he rode in on the obama wave. while certainly that was a factor, the virginia fifth district is conservative-leaning and mccain won it with 50.6% of the vote that year. it is traditionally a republican stronghold and has b

in the bill of rights of virginia. i am happy to say that because i teach in virginia. i am very proud of that. when i am asking for is a double request. reassert our commitment to the first amendment. throughout history, it has shown that it is a very valuable part of what the u.s. is about. in fact, i think this is one of the major attractions of the u.s. to immigrants who leave their countries. they truly believe that in this country, they can have a free and dignified being the they have missed elsewhere. the supreme court throughout the years has elaborated and emphasized the basic principles of the first amendment. chief justice rehnquist emphasizes that political devices cannot serve to invalidate otherwise permissible conduct. whatever we might feel about the person -- person sitting next to us, they have rights. even if we politically disagree, that is no reason to be a in a way that would infringe on those rights. furthermore, the first amendment's -- first amendment states that the powers of the government should reach actions only and not opinions. it is wonderful that we could all
